Fitness is IN! We haven’t seen anything like this since the fitness craze in the 70’s. In fact, the growth of the fitness industry in recent years is unprecedented. Why? Well, thanks to this marvelous little invention that we like to call the internet.
Ladies and gentleman – welcome to the age of fitness.
How do you benefit?
- Feeling down? Search for one of the millions of new motivation blogs, quotes or pictures. It’s easy, and it works!
- Tired of the old squat and lunge routine? Ask your trainer for an ingenious personalized workout. Not only is the industry expanding, but the science behind exercise is a frontier of new discoveries. Never get bored again! And that’s not all folks!
- New technologies and techniques are finding what works for some and what works for others. And if there’s a problem, there’s a name for it.
- Alongside better workouts, we’re also finding healthier alternatives to junk food and tastier versions of salad and water. A diet isn’t a thing to dread anymore, it’s a new way of eating!
- And it’s always a good thing when an industry expands, right? The economy benefits by people being taught how to be well and live nutritious lives.
- We are on our way to a healthier population. Teens see their friends doing it, adults can find the time for it, and children see their families doing it.
The downside:
- Two words- fitness cults. Dodgy trainers and miracle stories. Everyone is doing it. So why not you? We all know the dangers of ineffective exercise…
- And what about all those success stories? You’re working so hard, but you feel as though you’re getting nowhere? Suddenly, anything that looks good looks promising. Behind all the glittering promises of glorious innovative health programs there lies a shadow world of the truth. Your friend shows you a wonder product and you jump. NEVER! But we get desperate. Welcome to the dark-side of fitness obsession.
Educate yourself!
Know the difference between what will work and what won’t.
- Suddenly everyone is a fitness “expert”. Remember the consumer’s golden rule: if it sounds too good to be true then IT IS!
- Be careful of trainers that stress sweat over form and technique. A proper trainer will teach you the basics first. Don’t worry, intensity will follow form and technique.
- And what about “wonder” diets? Anything that encourages starvation, detox or a miraculous new product is to be heartily avoided. A proper diet encourages moderation and balance. Don’t be taken in by the 30- day phenomenon is probably going to affect your health in the long run.
- Okay, so what works? Personalization and small boot camps. It’s your workout – own it (literally).

"In a world of fast fixes and crash diets, the best piece of advice I can offer to a novice workout warrior is to ask questions. When someone offers you a fast fix for something, be sure to get all the details. If results sound too good to be true, it likely is. If you aren't sure, ask a trainer. Rather than ruin your metabolism with a crash diet, or take a supplement that messes with your body's rhythm, get all the information first and then make an educated decision. Fast fixes are all the rage these days, but slow and steady really does win the fitness race."Dani Sanusi, Instructor, Thrive Community Fitness – Oak Harbor
